This book is an attempt to initiate Romanian readers into the history of English, with a focus on the English language before 1500. Like any initiation, it is inherently characterized by certain limitations. First of all, it is a book that will mainly focus on the linguistic period before 1500, offering only glimpses of the English spoken by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and only brief excursions into the English employed by Samuel Johnson’s eighteenth-century readers. There is a lot that this “history of English” leaves out, and I have chosen to do so in the hope of being able to share with my readers the story of English from 1500 onwards in another book, which will allow me to give justice to a linguistic development that is every bit as fascinating as the earlier story that I have opted to present here.
